Ha, the year-end lists are here again! Time to round up who’s hot and not. And of course, it is not only the music charts countdown that we look forward to. As culinary aficionados, we look forward every year to the launch of the Gault Millau guide. Unfortunately, due to corona, the launch of the guide only took place virtually this year. The banquet that is traditionally provided by the chef of the year has once again been thwarted. But let’s remain positive and hope for a tasty 2022!
To get straight to the point, the chef who may call himself Chef of the Year throughout 2022 is Thierry Theys of Restaurant Nuance (https://resto-nuance.be/) in Duffel. A more than deserved prize for this chef who, together with his partner Sofie, serves top gastronomy in their intimate setting.
Unchanged culinary summit but Duke is catching up!
As is the case every year, we have to keep an eye out for changes at the top of Belgium’s culinary top. For years, Peter Goossens (Hof Van Cleve, https://hofvancleve.com/) has been swaying along with Christophe Hardiquest (Bon Bon, https://www.restaurant-bon-bon.be/nl/). And this year, too, it remains unchanged.
In the top of Belgium, we also note the striking entry of Hertog Jan who opened a new restaurant in Botanic Sanctuary in Antwerp: immediately 18/20. Wow!
New blood
Finally, we are also always charmed by a number of awards that put young talent in the spotlight. Thus, the chef Martijn Defauw (Rebelle/ https://restaurantrebelle.be/), François-Xavier Lambory (Stirwen/ https://www. stirwen.be/ ) and Martin Volkaerts (L’ Amandier, http://amandier.be/WordPress3/ ) respectively honoured as Young Chef of the Year for Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia.

At the end of the year, there was also a nice award for Door73 (https://www.door73.be/) in Ghent as Gastro-bistro of the year. We had a great meal there last Thursday with chef Eric Ivanidis and his team. The review will be online soon!
