Good news for the whisky lovers among us … the Double Cask range of The Macallan gains a new family member: The Macallan Double Cask 30YO! The Double Cask range celebrates the coming together of two styles with a unique character in the foreground that is enhanced by the underlying familiar aromas. World-renowned photographer Steve McCurry captured the marriage between the classic Macallan style and the unmistakable sweetness of American oak beautifully. The use of vibrant colours and varying textures is also reminiscent of the great Flemish still lifes of the 17th century.
A distinctive Macallan
The mastery of the union of Oloroso sherry seasoned American and European oak casks results in a perfect partnership that creates a range with an extraordinary flavour profile of vanilla and subtle spiciness. The brand new Double Cask 30 Years Old completes the range as a single malt with a rich flavour of fresh honeycomb, vanilla and red apples. This combination of flavours reveals an unparalleled investment of time and an extraordinary commitment to the mastership for which The Macallan has been known since 1824 .

The Macallan even goes a step further. Instead of buying Oloroso sherry seasoned American and European oak casks from Sherry bodegas, they have partnerships with several cooperages and Sherry bodegas from Jerez. This allows The Macallan to select their own trees from specific regions, decide which cooperage will make the barrel and which Sherry Bodega will mature their barrels with Olorosso Sherry for almost two years. The Olorosso Sherry remains in Jerez and the oak cask is shipped to The Macallan’s distillery in Speyside, where they fill the casks with their New Make spirit and the maturation process begins. The quality of the oak cask determines up to 80% of the final character and flavour of The Macallan. This makes the cask the most prominent factor in guaranteeing and delivering the quality and style of this single malt.

IN COOPERATION WITH STEVE MCCURRY
With dozens of covers, more than a dozen books and countless exhibitions around the world to his credit, Steve McCurry has been one of the most iconic voices in contemporary photography for more than 30 years, with nature at the centre of his work. In 1985, Steve McCurry’s photograph ‘Afghan Girl’ appeared on the cover of National Geographic and became possibly the most famous of all covers.

Inspired by the natural landscape at The Macallan Estate, Steve McCurry was drawn to an oak tree to evoke the character of the whisky. The tree was the perfect subject to capture the seemingly simple yetrich and complex character of Double Cask 30 Years Old. Steve used lively pigmented to evoke the clear and lingering medley of flavours in the whisky. Thesoft, warm colour palette which is beautifully bathed in natural light reflects themajor flavour notes of fresh honeycomb and vanilla, as well as the delicate citrus of red apple and orange oil. The rich colour of the whisky and its translucent glow influenced the colour palette of the entire work, with the soft caramel and brown tones and the red and green accents further emphasising the depth of the flavour profile. The reflective surface reinforces the idea of flavours mingling, almost as if they were merging seamlessly as one.
