When the World Cycling Championships have just finished, another global high mass awaits Flanders: the election of the 50 best restaurants in the world. This time, it is not the industrious workers of the road who will rejoice, but the best chefs in the world. Tomorrow, on 5 October, the best 50 restaurants in the world will be announced in Antwerp, which for the occasion has been dubbed the culinary capital of Flanders and by extension of the world.
It should come as no surprise that Flanders has the honour of hosting the global culinary high mass. In terms of the number of Michelin stars per square metre, we are among the best regions in the world. When foreigners think of Belgium and Flanders, they immediately think of the delicious things we have to offer, such as our extensive beer and chocolate culture. It was therefore a logical step for the 50Best to settle in our region. And Antwerp is the perfect host city. Recently, the ‘t Zilte was awarded a third star, and there is also an ambitious hotel and culinary concept in the pipeline with Botanical Sanctuary. Apart from the fact that Antwerp’s only five-star hotel will be located on this site, gastronomes are already looking forward to the revival of Hertog Jan by Gert de Mangeleer and Joachim Boudens.
Already 2 Belgian restaurants in the top 100
But back to the list of lists! Last week, the final 50 of the top 100 were announced. Two Belgians are on it: Willem Hiele with his adventurous restaurant in Knokke occupies the 77th place and the unsurpassed The Jane (Antwerp) with Nick Bril is at number 66. Today, we will find out how many other Belgians have entered the top 50. Will Peter Goossens (Hof van Cleve) be joined by Soon Hoon Degeimbre (L’Air du Temps) or ‘T Zilte (Antwerp)…I wonder what the worldwide jury will have to say?
