And if we all had a lot to worry about after this corona year, which has been hard on everyone. As if there hadn’t been enough calamity already, nature decided to unleash its devils over the south of our lovely country. The images of the flooded areas will be etched on our retinas forever. To escape from all this, a visit to the Sorbiers domain came in handy. Away from the world…
The road to the castle Les Sorbiers has already taken us through the beautiful dennenbossen of the Ardennes in Heer, a lovely little place not too far from Dinant. When we arrive, we can immediately start to relax with this beautiful picture. The castle is situated in a beautiful spot, right on the banks of the Meuse. The castle, once owned by the Boël family, is fully committed to nature. Not difficult when you 17 hectares of forest around you and from the terrace overlooking the largest island in the Meuse.

We are given a beautiful spacious room on the first floor of the castle. What strikes us is that there is no television in the room. And that was done very deliberately so that visitors can relax completely. Instead, the hotel provides a nice reading book on everyone’s bedside table. The hotel does have fast WiFi, so business people who come here for a retreat can still get their emails.

But mails are no longer an issue for us and so we head for the beautiful terrace for the first local beer of the day. The domain resolutely chooses for local producers and that seems to us a good choice on the road to learning sustainability and maintaining local employment. With this beautiful thought, we toast with a good beer from the Humblet family from Bertinchamps together with a tasty apero board. Here we toast to life and everything that can make it so beautiful. While we are being surprised by a terrace performance by a local band. Beautiful.

dinner with a view

We were also very much looking forward to the dinner. On the one hand because it takes place in one of the most beautiful places we have come across in the Ardennes: on a wooden terrace overlooking the Meuse. The beautifully balanced menu on our plates, ranging from a tasty gazpacho with vegetables from the region to a delicious piece of Belgian beef with a béarnaise made from our own garden herbs, shows that this is a good idea. Valanchon offers accessible bistro cuisine, although we had slightly higher culinary expectations in line with the location. But that couldn’t spoil the fun.

And that it was going to be a glorious morning, we could not have suspected at the time. After a refreshing night’s sleep, a delicious breakfast buffet with fresh home made products awaited us. Think honey from the local beekeeper or home made jams. Delicious. As icing on the cake, our cycling pride Wout Van Aert won Olympic silver during the breakfast. So we will remember this beautiful stay for more than one reason.
