What is regency
Regency is a period characterised by its elegance and etiquette, by balls and duels. This style period officially took place in England between 1811 and 1820. These were the years when the then King George III was unable to reign and his task was taken over by his son, the Prince Regent, hence the name Regency. In reality, this style period was much longer and had an influence all over Europe. During this period, fashion evolved from the royal wig era to functional, simple styles based on classical antiquity.

Material
The material of the regency dress was lighter and more transparent than that of its predecessors, the preference being for muslin. This fabric was then a lot smoother than the eponymous material we know today. Therefore, in order to create the same look, there are some modern alternatives in choosing the fabric. Therefore, choose garments made from soft and luxurious materials such as: cotton, tulle, voile, silk, lace or satin.

Silhouette
To bring the regency look into your wardrobe, choose a silhouette from this time period. At the beginning of the 19th century, fashion was determined by the clothing style of the classics. Women chose loose dresses that fitted closely under the bust, this is called the “empire waistline” and can easily be found in shops today. Furthermore, the most common silhouette was alow-cut neckline and short puffy sleeves.

Corset
The Regency period is also described as “The time of undress”because during this time they wore fewer layers than in previous years. One garment that did remain from the wig era was the corset. This garment, traditionally worn under clothing, was shorter in shape and less tightly worn than its predecessors during this period. To give this look a 2022 update, you can wear the corset over your clothes.

Accessories
To complete your regency look, you can use accessories. At the beginning of the 19th century, people chose scarves, caps, fans, parasols, gloves and small handbags to complete their look. Today, we don’t wear hoods anymore but these items will give any outfit an extra regency touch. Think small handbags that you can wear around your wrist, long white opera gloves or statement gloves, pearls or glitter and instead of a tiara, a glittery hair accessory.
